Agenda

7:30a – 8am / Registration

8a – 8:30am / Introduction

An overview of the class, learning objectives and general vocabulary.

8:30 – 10am / Tree Identification, Selection and Nomenclature

The session will start with the board brush stokes of the elements of tree identification and the significance of knowing the trees for selection and location success. As we dive deeper into the details and nuances of identification, we will review how scientific names are written and learn some of the more common names of Arizona trees. After this session, we will be able to discuss some potential problems with using common names of trees; describe how trees are classified; and have a basic knowledge of the classification system.

10:00 -11:30am / Tree Walk Activity

During this session, we will break the class into groups led by tree identification professionals. Each group will walk the grounds around the class facility and as a team, practice the tree identification process learned in the opening session. We will focus on morphological characteristics and recognize identification factors such as leaf arrangement and type, leaf shape and leaf margin, twig and bud characteristics, etc. to determine the identity of tree species.

11:30 – 12:30pm / Lunch

Lunch is on your own.  Please bring a lunch or be prepared to visit one of the local food outlets in the area.

12:30-1:30pm / Tree Management

Proper tree management starts with knowing the tree you’re managing. When trying to recommend an appropriate treatment, diagnosing issues, or understanding how a tree will respond to a change in condition, identifying the tree you’re dealing with is the first step. This Session will tie the identification and diagnosis steps together.

1:30-2:30p / Tree Health Factors

Biotic plant problems are caused by living organisms, such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, insects, mites, and animals. Abiotic disorders are caused by nonliving factors, such as drought stress, sunscald, freeze injury, wind injury, chemical drift, nutrient deficiency, or improper cultural practices, such as overwatering or planting too deep. Unfortunately, the damage caused by these various living and nonliving agents can appear very similar. Even with close observation, accurate diagnosis can be difficult. In this session we will review some of the clues and signs to help understand underlying causes to visible symptoms.

2:30-2:45pm / Break

2:45-3:45pm / Compounding Factors

In this session we will consider how tree health is impacted by a combination of factors. We will look at differences between primary and secondary diseases and recommend treatments for various tree health disorders. Using the information gained in the previous sessions, we will have an interactive discussion about how to identify the possibilities of compounding factors impacting tree health.

3:45-4pm / Learning Objectives Review and CEU Sheets
