Arizona Lottery Partners with the National Forest Foundation to Bring Wood to Families In the High Country

The Arizona Lottery’s “Gives Back” program and the National Forest Foundation are teaming up to provide much-needed wood to families in Northern Arizona. A $50,000 Gives Back sponsorship will support the “Wood For Life” program, to process downed trees from forest health and restoration projects, providing much-needed fuelwood to Navajo and Hopi communities. |

Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) is a native conifer found across northern and central Arizona, typically occurring as scattered individuals or small groves in piñon-juniper woodlands on rocky, well-drained soils. In Arizona landscapes, it often occupies slightly more protected microsites while maintaining strong drought tolerance once established. Growth form varies from shrub-like on harsh sites to small trees (15-30 ft) with narrow crowns that become irregular with age, and its blue-green, glaucous foliage and berry-like cones provide valuable winter forage and cover for wildlife. For tree care professionals, key considerations include its sensitivity to fire when young and susceptibility to juniper mistletoe. When properly sited, especially in northern Arizona, it remains a durable, low-water-use option for habitat plantings, windbreaks, and native landscape design. |
