Introduction, Importance of Wildlife in Tree Care & Resources  |  Ryan Gilpin, Nidus Consulting


Arizona Community Tree Council is hosting a workshop on the Tree Care for Birds Best Management Practices. Arborists have a unique connection with nature and wildlife in the urban forest. This six-hour workshop will focus on the best practices to act responsibly around wildlife and to navigate wildlife laws in Arizona. This workshop includes an outdoor portion where participants will assess habitat value and search for signs of nesting wildlife as well as appreciate common wildlife species and habitat in an urban forest. By the end of the day, participants should have all the skills they need to be a Wildlife Trained Arborist.


 Ryan Gilpin

Speaker Bio: Ryan Gilpin manages Nidus Consulting and provides arboricultural and ecological consulting services. Ryan’s education was in ecology with work experience in conservation and arboriculture. Ryan is co-author of the Tree Care for Birds Best Management Practices and particularly interested in minimizing impacts to nesting wildlife during tree care and creating wildlife habitat.

Laws Protecting Bird Species and Typical Nests of Birds in Arizona  Tracy McCarthey,  Arizona Game and Fish Department

This presentation will include a discussion of the history of state and federal laws protecting birds and their nests from harm, with details of how current laws may impact arborist activities and the timing of breeding birds in Arizona. It will also include detailed information on the type of bird nests and bat roosts that may be encountered in Arizona.


Tracy McCarthey

Speaker Bio:  Tracy McCarthey is the Avian Monitoring Coordinator at the Arizona Game and Fish Department. She has been with the Department for over 10 years working on the Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas project for four years, the Southwestern Willow Flycatcher project for six years, and has been the Avian Monitoring Coordinator for almost a year now. Tracy also spent 18 years as a private consultant and is very familiar with the state and federal laws protecting avian species.

     Liberty Wildlife Native Birds |  Laura Hackett,  Liberty Wildlife  &  Jan Miller,  Liberty Wildlife

    Meet a few native birds of prey up close and learn about their natural and individual histories. We will also show examples of common nests you may encounter as well as give you information about who to turn to for wildlife emergencies and various situations you may encounter.


    Laura Hackett

    Speaker Bio:  Laura Hackett is the wildlife biologist for Liberty Wildlife.  She has spent years working with native wildlife both out in the field and at the hospital at Liberty Wildlife.  Laura has worked in the animal rescue field since the early 2000’s and finally took a permanent position at Liberty in 2016. On top of field work to survey sites for companies and helping utilities with their Avian Protection Programs, Laura is in charge of the Education Department, social media, and the animal training duties at Liberty.


     Jan Miller

    Speaker Bio:  Jan Miller is the Animal Care Coordinator for Liberty Wildlife.  She has spent years working with native wildlife both out in the field and at the hospital at Liberty Wildlife.  Jan has been involved with Liberty Wildlife first as a volunteer and then as the medical care coordinator for over 30 years. She is a certified vet tech who first worked in the pet care field but then moved towards her passion of avian and wildlife species.
