    The Urban Forestry Program Manager will play a critical role in the Mayor and City of Tucson’s efforts to develop a climate-resilient and sustainable community and will lead, direct, and manage the Mayor’s Tucson Million Trees campaign to plant one million trees on public and private property by 2030.

    At the center of the Tucson Million Trees initiative is the Mayor’s commitment to equity by creating green spaces in all communities and especially in frontline and low-income communities that have historically been the most affected by climate change and environmental degradation.

    This position will work in conjunction with the Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Program Manager within the City’s Water Department to implement urban forestry efforts on City-owned lands; act as City liaison and coordinator for non-profit and private groups engaged in urban forestry within City limits; develop and oversee community outreach related to the Tucson Million Trees initiative; and pursue grant and funding opportunities that support the implementation and maintenance of Tucson’s urban forest.

    The successful candidate will demonstrate:

    • Experience designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating urban forestry projects
    • Experience leading and managing a major urban forestry or related program
    • Knowledge of the Sonoran Desert ecosystems, wildlife, habitat
    • Commitment to environmental conservation and addressing climate and environmental justice
    • Exceptional skills and qualities in leadership, communication, organization, and emotional intelligence needed to lead a program that:

    º Closely adheres to ongoing policy direction provided by the Tucson Mayor & Council

    º Requires engaging and aligning efforts across multiple City departments

    º Involves developing and managing relationships with multiple nonprofit, private sector, and community partners

    º Requires a balance of both short-term tactical approaches (e.g. rapid assessment, quick wins, fundraising) and long-term planning and programmatic approaches (e.g. developing a formal City of Tucson Urban Forest Plan and sustainable program)

    º Provides consistent and effective communications with the public to report on progress, demonstrate the multiple benefits of a healthy urban forest, and builds support and momentum toward achieving the Tucson Million Trees objective

    Minimum Qualifications: 

    Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor's Degree

    Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 3 years managing complex projects and coordinating experts from different fields

    Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

    An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position, may be considered.

    Salary: $53,206.40 - $94,681.60/annually ***Salary in accordance with Administrative Directives***
