Tree Trimmer Rescue
Dateline: 1-6-11
We just learned from the news that a 30-year-old man was extricated this morning from the palm he was trimming near Thunderbird and 19th Avenue in Phoenix. He is currently in the hospital.
Emergency crews are called to many palm incidents every year. These incidents have resulted in fatalities:
• In April 2010 a tree trimmer died when he was pinned under a 2,000-pound dead palm skirt.
• In April 2009 another palm accident claimed the life of another tree trimmer.
• In December 2007, a man fell 40 feet to his death while trimming a palm in Tempe, AZ.
The Arizona Community Tree Council, the leaders in tree care and education in Arizona, conducted a February 4th workshop to address safety and mitigate these accidents and deaths caused from trimming trees in Arizona. On Saturday, January 15, the ACTC held its Annual Tree Climbing Championship, which also addressed tree safety.

Help for Freeze-Damaged Landscapes
Dateline: 1-6-11
Even in the desert freezing temperatures can occur causing damage to many landscape plants and making them look a bit ‘toasted’. While many frost-sensitive plants can tolerate freezing temperatures for brief periods, nights that dip into the low 30’s or below for several hours can be deadly for even the hardiest of plants.
